At The Kusasa Academy, we remind parents of a simple but powerful truth: a child spends about six years at our school, but more than twenty years at home.

This shapes how we approach education. Schools teach children, but families shape the environment in which learning succeeds or struggles. For this reason, The Kusasa Academy places strong emphasis on partnership with parents, especially in helping learners move from competence to excellence.

We continually seek to strengthen the alignment between school and home so learners can thrive.

Our Context

The Kusasa Academy learners perform above provincial averages, despite operating in a very different socio-economic context from most high-performing schools.

Consider this: many of the best schools against which we benchmark our academic performance serve communities where a large proportion of parents have tertiary qualifications. In these environments, education is deeply embedded in family culture, and children often grow up in homes where academic language, structured study habits, and confidence in navigating the education system are part of daily life.

In The Kusasa Academy community, the reality is very different. Many parents place enormous value on education, but for many families, parents either did not complete secondary school, or weren’t able to study beyond secondary school. As a result, our school often carries a larger share of the academic responsibility than other well-performing schools. Not because parents care less, but because many have not had the same exposure or confidence to support academic work.

This makes our learners’ progress particularly meaningful. It reflects not only the work happening in classrooms, but also the growing partnership between the school and families as parents gain confidence and practical tools to support learning at home.

For this reason, The Kusasa Academy increasingly focuses on strengthening both the learner and the home learning environment, ensuring that children are supported not only at school, but within the family structures that shape their long-term educational pathways.

Parent Workshops

Our philosophy is simple: children grow best when expectations are high but support remains strong. The aim is not pressure, but encouragement that builds resilience and independence.

This thinking forms the basis of “growth conversations” and workshops that we run for parents. Together with parents, we unpack how they can implement small but powerful daily habits such as consistent bedtime routines, daily reading together, limiting weekday screen time, and asking thinking questions like ‘Why?’ and ‘How do you know?’

None of these strategies add more homework. Instead, they strengthen the thinking environment around the child.

The response from parents has been deeply encouraging. Many families immediately begin implementing the ideas discussed. Here is some of the feedback our parents have shared when faced with the challenge to build a stronger learning environment for their children:

“The meeting made me realize how important it is to be involved not only at home but also at school. We have already started limiting screen time, reading stories together, and making sure bedtime routines are consistent.”

“I feel much clearer about expectations for my child and confident about the support from teachers. We will do our part at home to help him become his best.”

“I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes – tears of gratefulness. The love and effort you put into our child truly shows.”

These responses reinforce what we know to be true: when parents and schools work together, children flourish.

Looking Forward

The goal is not only improved test results, but long‑term academic confidence. When families and schools work together, children develop stronger motivation, healthier academic habits, and greater resilience.

At The Kusasa Academy, we believe that education does more than change individual lives. It strengthens families and communities for generations.

Through your support, The Kusasa Academy is not only educating children; it is strengthening families, empowering parents, and building a culture of learning that continues long after learners leave our classrooms.

Thank you for being part of The Kusasa Academy journey.
