Grade 4 Graduation: A bell, a board, and a beautiful goodbye

On the last day of school (3 December), we celebrated the graduation of our 24 Grade 4 learners: most of whom will head to Franschhoek High School in 2026 to begin Grade 5.

It was a day full of joy and meaning: prizegivings, acknowledgements, and proud families gathered to honour what these children have accomplished. And then came the moment that always stays with us: our Bell Ringing Ceremony.

Volunteer Mark Chapman was there and captured the experience perfectly in words for us:

“How do you measure the performance of a school and the impact that it has?

Yes, there are reports and results. But sometimes the fullest and more intangible answer is found in a simple ritual. Today, the last day of the academic year, I was fortunate enough to witness the simple and beautiful bell ringing ceremony that, for me, perfectly encapsulates the imprint of the school on its students and families.

Each grade 4 graduate, wearing a blue sash and holding their diploma, is walked by a teacher to place a silver name plaque on our alumni board; joining the names of every Kusasa alumni who has gone before. It is so special to see the palpable connection between the teachers and their students.

After a hug, a photo, and a deep breath, they ring the school bell one last time as they pass through the school gates as Kusasa learners. They are cheered on by teachers, staff, volunteers, and (most importantly) their parents and guardians.

Some ring it with gusto. Some ring it quietly. Some ring it through tears. But every child walks out carrying something lasting: a sense of belonging, the imprint of values, and a growing belief in their own future.

The proud, smiling eyes of the parents made this just as clear. Speaking on behalf of all parents at today’s ceremony, one parent eloquently reflected on the importance of these foundational years and expressed deep gratitude for the exceptional start the school has given their children. He spoke of the shared commitment by parents to volunteer their time, to work closely with teachers, and to support their children in a values-based learning environment—an effort that has touched not only those present, but the wider community. He concluded by noting how privileged we are to witness the early steps of South Africa’s future leaders.”

Kusasa stays with you: voices from our alumni

Our graduates are being welcomed to Franschhoek High School by the Kusasa alumni who have gone before them. Three of them gave stirring speeches to our grade 4s – and in their words, you can hear the Kusasa values echoing on: gratitude, courage, perseverance, and joy.

Endinako Maziko captured what so many alumni feel when they look back: “I miss those mornings filled with love… all the dancing… the music and all the singing… the FUN! In the end, both schools contributed to be what I am today and I’m grateful for that. THANK YOU.”

Worship Kakono reflected on growth — the bittersweetness of leaving, and the courage it takes to keep moving forward: “Now I’m in my final year of primary school but still carry all those amazing memories and will cherish them forever.”

Ashante Davids spoke about the strength Kusasa gave her, both in character and confidence — and how stepping into high school opened new opportunities.

To our donors and friends: this is what your support makes possible. It doesn’t end at Grade 4! It travels with our learners into new classrooms, new challenges, new friendships, and new leadership roles.
